'Extreme' geomagnetic storm may bless us with more aurora displays tonight and tomorrow
Briefly

The strongest geomagnetic storm in 20 years made the colorful northern lights visible in areas of the US too far south to normally see them. Another opportunity to view the aurora may arise tonight with clear skies, extending to areas like Alabama on Sunday.
NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center reported powerful solar flares and coronal mass ejections, reaching 'extreme' G5 conditions, unseen since 2003. Director Clinton Wallace described the event as 'unusual and potentially historic.'
Solar flares interacting with Earth's magnetosphere cause geomagnetic storms, affecting technology but not harming individuals directly. While disruptive to communication, GPS, satellites, and power grid, harmful radiation from flares does not penetrate Earth's atmosphere.
