Meta Faces Fresh Probe Over 'Addictive' Effect on Kids

We are not convinced that Meta has done enough to comply with the DSA [Digital Services Act] obligations-to mitigate the risks of negative effects to the physical and mental health of young Europeans on its platforms Facebook and Instagram, Thierry Breton, the EU's internal markets commissioner said.
We want young people to have safe, age-appropriate experiences online, Meta spokesperson Kirstin MacLeod mentioned that the company has developed more than 50 tools and policies to protect young people, welcoming the opportunity to share their work with the European Commission.
Investigations into Meta and TikTok under the Digital Services Act rules were separate, but showed similarities in how the platforms function. The Commission noted competitive effects and feature copying among platforms.
Social media's impact on children has raised concerns about rewiring brains and increasing anxiety, highlighted by Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generation. In October, US states sued Meta over alleged harmful effects on young users.
