Hundreds of French police deployed amid New Caledonia riots

France declared a state of emergency in New Caledonia starting at 5 am on Wednesday, giving authorities additional powers to ban gatherings and forbid people from moving around the island.
Noumea resident Yoan Fleurot described witnessing looting and destruction of properties, with some store owners allowing looting to prevent further destruction.
Residents in Magenta district of Noumea wore white armbands to peacefully watch over the neighborhood amidst the crisis.
