US Special Forces carried out an overnight operation that knocked out electricity in parts of Caracas and captured long-serving Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro in or near a safe house. Maduro was flown to the United States and landed at Stewart Air National Guard Base, then was due to be transferred to a New York detention center. President Donald Trump said the United States would temporarily run Venezuela until a safe, proper and judicious transition and said the takeover would prevent others hostile to Venezuelans from seizing control. At least 40 people reportedly died during the raid, and the intervention drew condemnation from Democrats and world leaders.
