Bungie Is Officially Ending Development For Destiny 2, Final Update Launching Soon
Bungie will stop creating new Destiny 2 content on June 9, 2026, with the Moment of Triumph serving as the final new content drop. Destiny 2 will remain playable for the foreseeable future, with changes in the final update intended to make returning players feel welcome. Bungie stated that focus is shifting toward incubating new games and beginning a new journey as a studio. No announcement of a direct successor has been provided, leaving uncertainty about what comes next for the Destiny franchise. Bungie’s other live-service title, Marathon, appears to be underperforming based on Steam player counts. Sony has also recorded a second impairment charge related to its 2022 acquisition of Bungie.
"“As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio,” says Bungie in a post on bungie.net."
"“Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to.”"
