Shotputter Lawrence Kensinger breaks 43-year-old record at City championships
Lawrence Kensinger delivered a final throw that broke a 53-year-old City shot put record, reaching 65 feet, 11 inches and moving into the state lead. After two early attempts that were scratched, he took a safer approach on his third throw and then unleashed his fourth to surpass the section record of 64-08.75. He described the release as feeling like air and credited the result to confidence built during the competition. Kensinger previously played football in ninth and 10th grade before focusing on shot put. He trains with Nick Garcia at Notre Dame High, follows a lifting program, and sends videos for technical analysis, crediting coaching as essential to his progress.
"He works with Nick Garcia, the strength and condition coach at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks. "I've been throwing since my freshman year and go to his clinics and train with him once a week. He gives me my lifting program. I send him videos and he does technical analysis. Having a good coach is vital. I couldn't have done this without him.""
