A woman turned her parents' garage into her apartment to make room for her grandparents in the main house
Sofia Palacios lives in her parents’ detached garage in San Diego. After her family moved into a new home in January, she turned the garage into her bedroom so her grandparents could stay in the main house. She uses one half of the garage as a bedroom and the other half as an art studio and study. From her bedroom door, she can step directly into the backyard, keeping outdoor time close and convenient. Palacios, 22, values living near her family and says it frees up space inside the house for her grandparents. She and her two sisters live with their parents, and her parents do not charge rent.
"Sofia Palacios lives in her parents’ detached garage, so the yard is only ever a few steps away. Although it might not be the most conventional sleeping spot on her parents’ property, Palacios told Business Insider she loves her garage apartment. It keeps her close to her family and frees up space inside the house for her grandparents."
"She decided to turn the garage into her bedroom so her grandparents could stay in the main house. Palacios uses one part of the garage as her bedroom and the other half as an art studio and study. When Sofia Palacios wants to spend time in her backyard, all she has to do is step outside her bedroom door."
"Anytime we go out with friends, we just kind of get going on how much we love my parents. They're the best."
"My parents are never overbearing. They're never intrusive. They've always just allowed us to come and talk to them whenever we're ready, and they take an interest in our lives without being judgmental of what we're going to tell them. Their parents also don't charge them rent, as they're happy to have their daughters living at home."
