1st-ever North Bay student mariachi band to perform at Disneyland in June; needs help fundraising
A student mariachi band from Elsie Allen High School in Santa Rosa has been selected to perform at Disneyland on June 11, alongside two Santa Rosa high school marching bands. The group includes 90 students, many connected to agriculture and manufacturing families, and they are raising $72,000 in the coming weeks to cover travel costs. Each student must secure about $800 in donations to pay for meals, transportation, hotel stays, and Disneyland admission. Students describe growing up with mariachi music through family traditions and learning instruments such as guitar and vihuela. The band has launched an online fundraising drive to reach the required amount.
"The parents have raised almost $30,000. The trip cost us $72,000. Each student needs to come up with about $800 in donations in order to go. To cover meals, transportation and hotel and of course admission,"
"Dedicated student musicians with "Mariachi Lobos de Elsie Allen High School" in Santa Rosa have a passion for the music of their parents and grandparents. "I started on the guitar and the instrument I play, which is the vihuela," said student Aaron Gonzalez. "I've always grown up around it with my parents always playing it," said student Octavio Infan."
"Now, they're hoping to share that love with an entirely new and "magical" community. "We will be the first mariachi to go to Disneyland from the North area of California," said student Nellie Roman. The mariachi band is invited to perform at Disney California Adventure on June 11th."
"But they, along with the marching bands of Elsie Allen High and Santa Rosa Language Academy, need to raise a lot more money get all 90 students there. The group has launched an online fundraising drive and they hope you can make a donation. The money will be used to pay for travel, hotel stays, and Disneyland admission."
