Openreach tests out 50 Gbps broadband - no date for delivery
Briefly

Openreach, the network arm of BT, has successfully tested a 50 Gbps broadband connection using 50G PON technology in Ipswich, achieving download speeds of 41.9 Gbps and upload speeds of 20.6 Gbps. This trial indicates that current fiber customers may eventually access these enhanced speeds. However, Openreach stated that commercial availability is not imminent, reflecting increasing data demands. The company is transitioning from older GPON technology to newer XGS-PON equipment for future upgrades, signaling readiness for technological evolution amidst intensifying competition in the UK broadband market.
"It won't be available commercially just yet," Openreach stated, emphasizing that while trials have shown impressive speeds, there are no current plans for rollout.
Trevor Linney, Openreach director, noted that the trial with 50 Gbps speeds indicates readiness for future demands as online data consumption continues to rise.
