MTA police arrested Basilio Hidalgo, 40, for driving an SUV onto the LIRR tracks while intoxicated, causing significant delays and infrastructure damage.
The incident began when Hidalgo drove his SUV onto the tracks, resulting in two damaged tires and subsequent front-end damage, leading to fires that the Floral Park Fire Department extinguished.
Metro-North track maintainers worked to remove the SUV from the tracks while MTA Police conducted an investigation into how Hidalgo drove onto the rail line.
Delays on the Hempstead Branch lasted until 8:40 p.m., while other train lines resumed service under speed restrictions around 5:30 p.m.
