Shakira was acquitted of tax fraud in Spain after an eight-year legal dispute. The court ruled that Spanish authorities could not prove she met the requirement of living in Spain for 183 days in 2011, finding she spent 163 days instead. The decision also required the Spanish treasury to repay nearly $65 million in improperly collected funds, plus interest. The dispute centered on whether she qualified as an official Spanish tax resident in 2011. Her potential residency was linked to her relationship with Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqu, with whom she has two sons. Shakira issued a statement saying there was never fraud and that she had been targeted for years.
"After the ruling was announced, Shakira released the following statement: "After more than eight years of enduring brutal public targeting, orchestrated campaigns to destroy my reputation, and sleepless nights that ultimately impacted my health and my family's well-being, the National High Court has finally set the record straight. There was never any fraud, and the Administration itself could never prove otherwise, simply because it wasn't true. Yet, for nearly a decade, I was treated as guilty.""
