Africa Day 2026 will be celebrated across Ireland with events honoring African culture and heritage leading into summer. A flagship event at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham will be followed by celebrations in all counties. Galway city’s main event will take place at Salthill Park on Saturday, May 23 from 12pm, with family-friendly programming including music, dance, fashion, art, and food from different African countries. Youth performances and creative engagement will be included, along with cultural performances highlighting African-Irish connections. African and intercultural food stalls will offer participants a variety of foods from across the continent. Galway City Councillor Helen Ogbu and Mayor Mike Cubbard link the day to visibility, belonging, representation, and Galway’s multicultural identity.
"Africa Day holds deep personal and community significance for me. It celebrates visibility, belonging, representation, and the enormous contribution African communities make to Galway and Ireland every day. This unity reflects the strength of diversity, integration, cultural exchange, and community collaboration in making Galway a welcoming and inclusive city for all."
"Africa Day is a chance for everyone in Galway, both the wider community and African communities living here, to celebrate Galway's status as Ireland's most multicultural city. People of African heritage are an important part of life in Galway. They are part of our neighborhoods, our schools, and our workplaces, working alongside people from Galway, across Ireland, Europe, and around the world."
"The main celebration for Galway city will be held at Salthill Park on Saturday, May 23 from 12pm. Youth performances and creative engagement are part of the day's programme, as well as cultural performances highlighting the cross between African-Irish culture. African and intercultural food stalls are to be set up for participants to taste a variety of food from across the continent."
