A Summer of Opera: England's 2026 Festival Season
The English countryside hosts world-class opera during summer, with performances in intimate houses and grand estates. The 2026 season includes Monteverdi’s Orfeo, Puccini crowd-pleasers, and a world premiere of John Tavener’s mystic pantomime Krishna. Glyndebourne Festival runs from 21 May to 30 August and combines established works with first-time productions. The festival opens with its first-ever production of Puccini’s Tosca, featuring a UK debut by American soprano Caitlin Gotimer and a debut Puccini appearance by Robin Ticciati. It also returns Rossini’s Il turco in Italia, described as a feel-good romantic comedy. The festival’s major premiere is Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, staged by William Kentridge in his Glyndebourne debut with Krystian Adam in the title role.
"The festival's most anticipated premiere arrives on 14 June with Monteverdi's 1607 masterpiece L'Orfeo (14 Jun - 25 Jul). South African artist and Olivier Award-winning director William Kentridge brings his distinctive visual imagination to this staging, with Polish tenor Krystian Adam in the title role. It marks both Kentridge's Glyndebourne debut and the house's first Monteverdi production."
