France bans Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir after 'unspeakable' flotilla detainee taunts
France banned Israel’s far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from entering French territory, citing “unspeakable” behavior toward activists and French and European citizens. The ban followed actions targeting passengers on the Global Sumud Flotilla who were detained by Ben-Gvir’s police force. France’s foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced the decision and said French nationals cannot be threatened, intimidated, or brutalized in that way, especially by a public official. Barrot called on the European Union to impose sanctions as well. Ben-Gvir faced global outrage after promoting videos showing him taunting detained flotilla activists, including waving an Israeli flag over detainees with hands appearing bound. Comment was sought from Ben-Gvir’s spokesperson and the office of Israel’s prime minister.
