Dutch regulator warns of privacy risks DeepSeek, launches investigation

The Dutch data protection authority AP is increasingly alarmed about the privacy policies of the Chinese application DeepSeek, prompting a broader investigation. Chairman Aleid Wolfsen emphasized the importance of understanding how personal data is handled, given that sharing personal information outside the EU must follow strict privacy regulations. Concerns are raised about unlawful data transfers, especially regarding third-party information. The AP is closely collaborating with European regulators to assess compliance, with the Italian regulator already blocking DeepSeek due to similar privacy concerns.
According to the privacy watchdog, whether Chinese companies like DeepSeek meet European requirements is currently unclear. The AP is therefore in close contact with other European regulators.
The AP stressed that sharing personal data with companies outside the EU must meet strict privacy requirements. There must be sufficient safeguards so that people can control their personal data.
