Nicky Lopez was designated for assignment by the Cubs. Kevin Alcantara was called up from Triple-A Iowa as the corresponding move. Alcantara was already on the Cubs’ 40-man roster, and the Cubs had an open spot on that roster. Because of this, Lopez’s designation for assignment leaves Chicago with 38 spots filled on the 40-man roster. Bruce Levine reported that Alcantara was present in the Cubs’ clubhouse earlier that day. Additional updates were expected after the move.
