Canada has reported 95 measles cases this year, significantly higher than the total of 147 cases for all of last year. The rise in cases is linked to an outbreak that started in New Brunswick and has spread to Ontario and Manitoba. Dr. Theresa Tam warns that this emphasizes the virus's transmission risk among under-vaccinated communities. The first infection in southwestern Ontario was traced back to a traveler from Europe who attended a wedding, leading to a cascade of transmissions. Health authorities are concerned about the ongoing outbreaks as the virus poses serious risks, particularly to young children.
The fact that the numbers are growing this year demonstrates how this virus can spread if people were not vaccinated, Dr. Theresa Tam told CBC News.
It's my understanding that a traveller infected with measles [from Europe] attended that wedding... and if those communities are under-immunized then it's just a cascade, Dr. Malcolm Lock said.
