Ode to Miller Lite
A parent repeatedly advised that it is hard to get in trouble drinking Miller Lite, after observing careful drinking habits. The advice was dismissed for years as stubbornness against the craft beer trend. In the 20s, craft beer and other alcohol became a hobby involving long lines for limited releases, focused wine obsessions, and vintage bourbon hunting. Looking back, the pursuit functioned as a defense mechanism after moving from working-class roots into elite private education and social circles with more money and cultural polish. Drinking decent alcohol was treated as a marker of being civilized, but the belief shifted toward accepting Miller Lite as often sufficient.
"You may have a trust fund and come from a stock of people who “summer,” I reasoned, but I'll be damned if you know more about food or alcohol than I do. I viewed drinking decent tipple as part of what it meant to be civilized. To some extent, I still believe that. But now I also believe that most of the time, it's Miller Time."
