Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann explained that Niklas Fullkrug was not selected for the World Cup squad for North America. Fullkrug had hoped his January move to Milan would revive his scoring form after a difficult first half at West Ham United. Limited starts at Milan and reduced playing time have coincided with a low league return, with only one league goal scored three months ago. Milan are also not expected to exercise their option to buy. Nagelsmann acknowledged that Fullkrug sometimes had defensive responsibilities and often came off the bench, but concluded that he did not score enough and another player had to be omitted.
"Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann explained in a press conference why he decided not to include Niklas Fullkrug in the squad for the World Cup. After a difficult first half of the campaign at West Ham United, Fullkrug hoped that his January move to Milan would bring him a new lease of life and that he would return to scoring goals at the levels seen in the Bundesliga."
"However, things haven't exactly gone to plan in Italy. While his starts have been limited, the former Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund man has still only scored one goal in the league and that came three months ago. It is already apparent Milan will not use their option to buy."
"Nagelsmann spoke at a press conference attended by reporters to mark the announcement of the squad that Die Mannschaft will take to North America. He was asked about not taking Fullkrug, who he did call up for the last European Championship. His numbers and his scoring performances for West Ham and Milan speak for themselves. He's scored very few goals in the last two years, he said (via MilanPress)."
"It's true that we have to consider that against Milan he often had to defend and that he came off the bench, but in the end he didn't score much and someone had to be left out."
