President Donald Trump granted a pardon to former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was convicted in March 2024 of conspiring to import cocaine and sentenced to 45 years for drug trafficking and weapons charges. Hernández was extradited to the United States in 2022 after leaving office and has been serving time at the U.S. Penitentiary, Hazelton in West Virginia while appealing his conviction. Trump wrote on social media that, according to people he respects, Hernández was treated very harshly and unfairly. Hernández's wife and children prayed and thanked God on hearing the news, and family members said his voice broke with emotion when told. Family and legal representatives called the prosecution an injustice and expressed gratitude to Trump, and no return date to Honduras has been announced.
