President Trump pardoned former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernandez despite Hernandez's conviction in an international drug trafficking scheme. Trump said he knew little about Hernandez, characterized the case as an Obama/Biden-style setup, and said Honduran supporters asked him to grant clemency. Trump rejected the notion that the pardon sends a wrong message about drug trafficking. Trump said opponents weaponized government institutions against him, citing indictments and impeachments and calling investigators vicious. One lead investigator on the Hernandez case was Trump ally and former personal lawyer Emile Bove, whom Trump later appointed deputy attorney general.
