"Democrats have for weeks demanded that any measure to fund the government include an extension of tax credits for Affordable Care Act health plans, which were created under Joe Biden and due to expire at the end of the year, sending premiums for enrollees higher."
"With Donald Trump's encouragement, Congress's Republican leaders refused, sparking a spending standoff that resulted in the longest government shutdown in US history."
House Republican leaders moved to hold a vote on legislation to reopen the government. Top Democrats vowed to oppose the bill because it does not extend Affordable Care Act premium tax credits. The credits were created under Joe Biden and are due to expire at the end of the year, which would raise premiums for enrollees. Republican leaders, encouraged by Donald Trump, refused to include the credits, producing a spending standoff that led to the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. A Senate compromise reauthorizes funding through January without the credits. The Senate passed the measure and the House is expected to consider it, with House Democrats and the New Democrat Coalition opposing the bill.
