What it's like to backpack one of the most dangerous trails in Hawaii

I took off my backpack and sat down on a rock. My forehead was glistening with sweat already, and my shoulders ached... the prospect of wandering up and over the cliffs stretched out before me was intimidating.
When it rains, the muddy path becomes treacherous, and hikers can lose their footing and tumble over sheer cliffs... can strand hikers at crossings for hours, or worse, can sweep them away.
