Briefly

Around 245 prisoners are sleeping on mattresses on the ground due to the levels of overcrowding, with the system currently at 111% capacity.
The Irish Prison Service is working closely with the Department of Justice to ensure a safe working environment for staff and safety for those in custody.
A prison overcrowding response group was established last year, resulting in 12 measures to tackle overcrowding and future capacity needs through 2035.
