Loch Lomond reservoir poised to spill after atmospheric river storm drenches Santa Cruz County
"The initial, most vigorous band has already passed through,"
"But we're still expecting a lot of rain through the afternoon. So we're not done yet."
"We're in a really good position with Loch Lomond,"
"If we have even a normal winter from here, easily Loch Lomond will spill."
A late-Wednesday atmospheric storm intensified overnight and produced hours of heavy rain across Santa Cruz County on Thursday. Observers recorded mid-afternoon totals of 4.79 inches in Ben Lomond, 3.38 inches in Boulder Creek, 3.4 inches in Scotts Valley, and 3.16 inches in Soquel. Loch Lomond reservoir, the city's only drinking water reservoir with a 2.8 billion-gallon capacity, reached about 92–93% full by Thursday morning. Santa Cruz relies on surface water for roughly 95% of its supply and began a strong water year on Oct. 1. Continued afternoon rainfall increased the chance that Loch Lomond will spill, improving water-supply outlooks.
