Heat wave intensifies from coast-to-coast, worsening wildfires

The heat is forecast to persist the longest in the West, where the National Weather Service shows at least some risk of extreme heat through August 10.
"The combination of hot temperatures/high heat indices, as well as very warm morning lows only dropping into the mid- to upper 70s, will be dangerous to anyone without access to adequate air conditioning," the NWS warned in a Thursday morning forecast discussion.
Stunning stat: Last month will go down in history as not just the hottest July on record for many cities in the West - particularly in California - but the hottest month overall since records began.
The Park Fire was at 391,200 acres and 18% contained as of Wednesday night. That is the state's fifth-largest blaze on record.
