"AI agents that will take actions for humans,"
"I want it to not only tell me, 'How much leave do I have' ... but then I want it to put in my leave slip, which is in a different system. We're building to that."
"won't just passively answer questions," but can "be given tasks that take hours, days or weeks to complete and then go off and do them autonomously."
The State Department plans to deploy AI agents capable of taking actions for employees rather than only answering queries. An enterprise generative AI chatbot called StateChat currently assists with translation and foreign affairs manual queries. The department aims to enable agents to perform cross-system tasks, such as submitting leave slips after reporting leave balances. Anthropic projects agentic systems by late 2026 or early 2027 that can autonomously complete tasks lasting hours to weeks. Agentic AI could increase automation and productivity while creating oversight, testing, evaluation challenges and risks of job displacement. An initial chatbot rollout involved 3,000 beta testers.
